Hyper Focus

(2017)

Hyper Focus was an alternative choice for Jordan’s sophomore venture. The choice in play was an example of “culturally responsive teaching,” which is the concept of utilizing what you know about students, where they come from, identity, etc as a means to help them connect to content. This play explores the struggles of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which as we know many young people are plagued with. The biggest challenge of this piece was the musical nature. Not knowing how to read music, Jordan by ear, added melody to the lyrics within the plays’ songs and developed catchy melodies on his guitar. He was able to teach several students guitar basics and utilized a live band during the performances.

Summary: Thomas Jefferson, known by his friends and family as TJ struggles with his ADHD diagnosis, along with getting along with his mother, being teased at school, his new crush and the discovery of his dead father’s guitar.
